Based on process philosophy and ecological philosophy, the project explores the concept of ecological awareness in the experience of a mountain, and in audiovisual artworks.

The fieldwork takes place at Tvergasteinstjørn on Hallingskarven mountain range in Norway, in a period of about five years. The methodology is Practice Research where knowledge develops in the interplay between theory and practice.

 In this project, the body and the senses are the primary sources of knowledge. Sensibilisation is to enhance the ability to discern and find meaning in the continuously changing nuances of the environment, and this is both method and aim. Diary notes, visuals and sound recordings, and readings of fiction and non-fiction literature also enhance sensibilisation.

The project explores in what way recording technology, photography, sound and video, facilitates, or distorts knowledge of the mountain. Audiovisual artworks, like photographs, audiodocumentaries, soundscape compositions, multimedia and videos are developed during the along the way. This creative process stimulates reflection and the artistic outcomes contribute to communication of the research findings. Finally, the project discusses how one may communicate experiences of nature through sound and visuals in a way that contributes to ecological awareness

This publication is a short version of the Ph.D.

Mountain meets urban waterfront

Mountain meets urban waterfront is an audio paper published in seismograph.org in the Fluid Sounds issue, August 2016. 

Audio papers resemble the regular essay or the academic text in that they deal with a certain topic of interest, but presented in the form of an audio production. It is an extension of the written paper. 

 

This is a collaborative soundwork made and presented at the Fluid Sounds Conference in Amager, Copenhagen in June 2015. It is a mix of mountain sounds and recordings from the post-industrial harbour of Islands Brygge. The work is a collaboration with Alexandra Baixinho, Institute for Social Sciences of the University of Lisbon (ICS-UL).  We recorded sounds from the harbour and installed the mountain composition. Then we recorded the mix of sounds from these two sites. Finally, we recorded our own voices.
